Thomas Rea, MD, MPH, first became interested in emergency medical services during his residency. He was fascinated by the way emergency medical technicians and paramedics responded to health crises in such a coordinated way, and how they could “snatch life back from the jaws of death.” Eight years ago, Dr. Rea had the opportunity to help lead a pilot program in Washington State to improve how sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is recognized and treated based on best practices.
Today, with support from the Medtronic Foundation, this program has expanded to three countries outside of the United States.
